Asking prices for UK properties fall further in August

Homeowners are slashing the asking prices for their homes in order to secure a property sale. This was according to Rightmove.co.uk, a large UK property portal who advertises on homes for sale. Rightmove.co.uk makes use of the latest asking price information in order to produce their monthly House Price Index.

According to the Rightmove House Price Index, the number of new people who want to sell their houses this August has reached and all-time low, compared to other years’ Augusts.

Even though there are not as many property sellers this August as in previous years, the sellers who have put their houses on sale are dropping their asking prices by an average of 2.3% - or £5,403.

Although fewer homeowners are selling at the moment, there is no lack in the current ‘stock’ on the property market. Many houses remain unsold, giving property buyers the opportunity to pick and choose from a wide selection of houses.

The commercial director of Rightmove.co.uk, Miles Shipside, explained: “Whilst those who do not have to sell are holding off, sellers who are also looking to buy are strongly placed to negotiate an equal or larger reduction in the price of the property they are buying. In addition, buyers currently benefit from the best choice in years. For example, properties that are architecturally desirable or in tight school catchment areas are increasingly attainable. Buyers with specific requirements should take a long-term view to try and secure their dream home.”
